The Pinacoteca Civica is the Civic Art Gallery of Reggio Calabria and hosts works of art (paintings and sculptures) belonging to the period XV-XXI century. The collections come from the formerly Museo Civico (works of art belonging to the First Nucleus) and more recent acquisitions and donations, some of them done during Biennali d’arte calabresi, event promoted by Alfonso Frangipane in the period 1920-1951 (works of art belonging to the Second Nucleus).
The most important works are two wooden panels by Antonello da Messina ("San Girolamo penitente" and "Visita di tre angeli ad Abramo"), belonging to the youth period of the artist. To be mentioned, also, Cristo e l'adultera" by Luca Giordano, "Il ritorno del figliol prodigo" by Mattia Preti, the sculpture "Laocoonte" by Pietro Bernini, "Battaglia del Volturno" by Andrea Cefaly, the sculpture "Nosside" by Francesco Jerace, the drawing "Pescatore scillese" by Renato Guttuso.
The Pinacoteca contains, also, works of art of Calabrian artists such as Vincenzo Cannizzaro, Ignazio Lavagna Fieschi, Rocco Larussa, Giuseppe Benassai, Annunziato e Tommaso Vitrioli, Nunzio Bava, Emilio Caputo, Antonio Cannata, Saverio Gatto, Rubens Santoro, and many paintings of Neapolitan area dating to XVII-XVIII centuries.
