Bergamot Museum

The history of the Prince of the citrus fruit

The Museum of Bergamoto in Reggio Calabria takes you on an exciting journey through history, culture, and the traditions linked to the world’s most prized citrus and its countless uses.

Museo del Bergamotto Reggio Calabria

A journey through the region’s history of excellence (that also seduced the Sun King).

Born thanks to the commitment of the International Academy of Bergamot, the museum is located in the historic centre and occupies the renovated premises of the building that also houses the historic Mercato Coperto di Reggio. The museum’s itinerary allows you to take a step back in time and retrace its cultivation history and the processing of the “Prince of Citrus Fruits,” starting from the year 700, through a great variety of rare instruments and equipment, from the first extraction machinery that dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, to the steam machinery of the 19th century, up to the electric motors of the early 20th century. This is accompanied by precious photographic documentation of considerable historical importance.

Let yourself be intoxicated by a unique aroma and flavour.

One wing of the museum is dedicated entirely to displaying products derived from the processing of bergamot and its precious essential oils: from personal care products, to the famous “Calabrisella” perfume, to dolls, roses, and snuffboxes, created from the dried citrus peel. During the visit, it is possible to taste various recipes that are based on the bergamot.

The essential bergamot oil is the only natural product capable of securing the aromatic bouquet of perfumes, giving them a unique fragrance that is still unmatched by synthetic oils.
