Gambarie is a mountain resort located in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park, 35 km from Reggio Calabria. This small mountain town is located at 1,350 metres above sea level and is surrounded by peaks of over 2000 metres. In the winter months, the mountain peaks are covered with snow; the ski resorts, numerous hotels, and refreshment points make it one of the main tourist destinations in the Reggio area.
A breath-taking view
What makes Gambarie a unique place to ski is without a doubt its incredible view: from the slopes it is possible to admire the Messina Strait, the Aeolian Islands, and Etna. Gambarie is a suitable place for those who love alpine skiing, as it features six tracks of varying difficulty that wind through the pine forests.
In recent years, a considerable investment has been put into upgrading the infrastructure, opening new tracks, creating theme adventure parks, and equipped parking areas. Moreover, it is possible to rent skiing and snowboarding equipment and to attend individual and group courses with the masters of the Gambarie Ski School.
On site there are many accommodation facilities such as hotels, bars, shops, restaurants, and small businesses.
A delicious tradition
An established tradition of the Reggio people is to eat the famous “Gambarie sandwich.” These are sandwiches filled with cold cuts, cheeses, and local pickled products that have a unique and original taste. A real citizen of Reggio always concludes his excursion to Gambarie with the famous sandwich that can be tasted in different spots, some just outside the centre. Where? Just ask the locals and they will tell you where to grab a good sandwich and a glass of wine.
