Between history and nature
The Reggio area is not only known for its sea, as the Aspromonte National Park reigns supreme over the entire territory. Nature comes to life in a thousand different forms in this area, including beech, chestnut, white fir, and broom trees. The fauna is also very rich, featuring some species that are quite rare: the wolf, fox, hare, wild cat, badger, black boar, southern squirrel, and dormouse. With respect to bugs and insects, the presence of the “Rosalia Alpina” is especially noteworthy, which is known for its unique black and blue colour. Among the memorable amphibians, there is instead the Peppered Salamandra and the Salamandra terdigitata (also called "Salamander with glasses").
Many excursions immersed in nature can be organized in the National Park of Aspromonte. Some of these paths evoke history, such as the one that passes through the Garibaldino path, crossed by the hero of the two Italian worlds who was rescued by the locals after being wounded in one leg.
Sport lovers will not be disappointed. A trip to Gambarie, a charming ski resort, will have you skiing while admiring the view of the sea around the Strait. For the more adverterous, there is Aspropark, the adventure park with paths equipped for disabled people, refreshment areas, an area for children, an educational park, and a bicycle path that can be used for mountain bike excursions.
